I have a serious credit card problem and am deliquent many months with collectors calling. I have a friend whom is aware of my situation. He is involved in prison ministries and actually believes that criminals just change and become good people after he leads them to God. I mentioned a concern about a *** offender (he molested 2 girls on 2 different occasions) who moved in where my daughter lives. She is a young teenager and my mom (whom she lives with) is concerned about her being out alone since he is considered high risk. I mentioned this concern to my friend and he said I have nothing to worry about because offenders never re offend (yeah right) and compared this *** offender’s problem with my overspending problem. I really don’t appreciate being compared to a *** offender. I think there are different degrees of sin and wrongdoing where he thinks they are all equal, for example, he says there is no difference if telling a white lie than there is murdering someone.
Let me add that the *** offender lives in the same apartment complex as my daughter, just accross the parking lot.

My husband is currently serving time in CA state prison his calulated time of release from CDC(Califonia Departmernt of Corrections) differences from the paperwork judgemented by the courts. He has processed and submitted correct paper work to his consulor as well has sent an arguement of judgement to the judge sentenced. Has not been corrected or addressed from CDC, however the judge did reply and advised it has to be corrected from CDC. CDC has failed to address the issue/review the paperwork to determine that it is/isnot an error. Being CDC has not address we feel there is a misunderstanding. We are seeking answers to whom may review. His current release date is 06/08/2007, but if honored with the half/time served date would be 12/06 even if they honor the 80% time it would be 03/07 which is still soon. If you could give me any information to address this issue it is much appreciated. Much respect, thank you.

On the one hand, I think that the death penalty should be abolished … at least until the socio-economic inequalities of our justice system have been adequately addressed and every prisoner has the right to be exonerated through DNA evidence.

But by the same token, there are thousands of utterly remorseless torture killers, serial killers, mass murderers, ganglords and others who have a long history of inflicting abject horror on others without a tinge of guilt.

It seems most people only examine this issue in the abstract - conservatives conveniently ignore issues of history, race and class while liberals and progressives only see death row inmates as victims of circumstance and economic conditions.

If your only answer to this issue is “We should fry them all,” or conversely, “capital punishment is murder” please don’t bother. I am only interested in thoughtful, rational answers that respect all aspects of this issue.

(Sigh) Seven minutes later and what do I get? A short diatribe from a pro-lifer who believes the only way to deal with the issue is emotionally and a one-sentence response from someone who equates the death penalty with murder.

Perhaps I was hoping for too much. I mean, why would anyone want to actually THINK about this issue when its so much easier to simply FEEL?

I’ll keep my hopes up that someone of less conviction and more curiousity will answer ….
Alright! Thirteen minutes later and I’ve got some really thoughtful responses! I’m looking forward to seeing what else I get, but I wanted to thank those of you who have obviously wrestled with this issue, rather than simply adopted a bumper sticker slogan as your position.
